professionalism is a state of mind, and unless you get paid for what you do then you are an amateur or its your hobby.
Do you really care what people think about you? I cant beleive that or you wouldnt put your work up on screen for possibly thousands of people to criticise.

I think it's cool to be an amateur. Well, at the moment anyway. Cos im only 17, you can really only be an amatuer and thats fine by me.

Perhaps one day I will be a professional. At least im not a rookie.

least its not as bad as the discussion , where people call themselves directors even though they have never directed anything.

    Chance.

Well I haven't worked with many professionals as such, but whilst in Ghana I got the chance to work with some people from TV3 on a short films, and it wasn't unusual for people to turn up over 3 hours for a shoot and that was just the producer. There was an amusing occasion when the director told of this really stupid producer for being late infront of the crew. She was totally useless and saw the english people only as as ource of money, rather than people to offer expertease and help. On the last day I got myself to the location and slept until everyone else turned up. So not even professionals are professional. but it was a different country. Has anybody else worked abroad?

I met one guy who claimed to be a director, and when I told him I had just bought a mini DV camera he seemed to think it was a make of camera- not a format. Then he asked if it did sound...

Surely if you make films, you're a filmmaker. Whether you get paid for it or not.

Now if you want to get technical, professional would surely mean that you do it as your main source of income (ie there are footballers and then there are professional footballers).

Amateur filmmaker to me conjures up images of people with cine cameras. People who make home movies.

Now I don't deem myself an amateur filmmaker. I'm not a kid messing about with a camera and some friends, or shooting air shows on a shakey camcorder.

I make films, therefore I deem myself to be a filmmaker. All said and done.

What I don't agree with is people being snobby about those of us who don't earn our money through film production or those people who come down hard on those who dream of being a filmmaker.

This business is tough enough without people who have yet to be recognised within the industry being snobish toward others who have yet to commit anything to celluloid/tape.

    Get my drift?
